S4: Supporting Students and Service Sites

Students need to sign up for lots of things besides courses. Things like service learning, teacher education, or social work programs all need to track students outside the scope of a course or even a semester. S4 provides a way for a campus to track the relationships between community partners, site coordinators, students, faculty, courses and programs, while being simple to maintain and easy to use.

We made it open source so even if your institution isn't part of the CSU, you can still download and install it.

S4 was first developed in 2011 by Kevin Miller, Lead Developer in Web Services at Cal State Monterey Bay. Kevin used Drupal to build a system for the CSUMB Service Learning staff but quickly realized he could record any type of service related to a student. The project was picked up by the the CSU Center for Community Engagement, who funded regional trainings in 2011 and 2012. It was first used in production in Fall 2012 at CSUMB.

Future development will include features that will help all campuses in the CSU meet the requirements of two executive orders regarding Field Trips and Internships.
